Strata I
At Athabasca Falls, I turned away from the familiar view and walked downstream. Water burst from the narrow channel and swept around tilted layers of shale. The rock's hard bands crossed the restless lines of the current, at once abstract and tangible.
At the Valley of the Five Lakes, I no longer remember which lake this was. Charred trunks, a golden slope, fresh green grass, emerald water, smoke-veiled mountains, bright snow, and gray-blue sky lay in successive layers. Their textures were entirely different, yet they belonged together. Trunks and reflections crossed the bands of color; scattered stones interrupted the stillness.
