The Water Quickens I
I expected a quiet, chilly morning at Pyramid Lake. Behind the photograph, people were taking pictures, hiking, talking, even getting married. Mist slowly lifted from the water, the gold on Pyramid Mountain grew brighter, and the fallen wood by the shore remained stubbornly there.
At another busy viewpoint, I waited for a gap between those leaving and those yet to arrive. For a moment, the canyon belonged to the sound of mountain and river. Water from the high ice twisted through the rock and hurried downstream.
Higher up, I could see the whole of Sunwapta Falls. I had no wide view I was happy with, no unusual weather, no autumn color. I recorded the force of the water as it divided around the wooded island, gathered again, and plunged.
